Tree of Life
Drawing skills, collage work, and color selection/application are important parts of this assignment. Students are first shown several different methods to draw a tree. This is the base of the project on which everything is built upon – and as with anything, a strong foundation is critical to the success of the project. After drawing on the tree, students are allowed to select the media in which they will be placing the color on it with. Watercolor paint, colored pencil, marker, or crayon are their options.
This project is called “The Tree of Life” because the focal point of this assignment is the collage work that is applied. The collage is meant to consist of images that represent the student’s own unique perspective on life and what is important to them. They must include at least 40 different images. To fit 40 images on their tree, they must be relatively small. Careful cutting around the perimeter of each object is important too. When they have completed this project, they write an artistic statement detailing and explaining their tree - and how key points on it represent themselves.
