Leafless Landscape
These barren landscape paintings have a nearly wistful feeling to them. The changing of the seasons is something we know well in Minnesota and there is a certain tension in the air when the trees have lost their leaves but snow has not yet blanketed the land. Soon will come the inevitable. These paintings communicate that feeling and students worked to add perspective, depth, and volume to their paintings. The process for these artworks is unique in that we start by creating the trees out of masking tape. Students observe how trees branch up and out and apply the tape in smaller and smaller strips to fill up the top. Layering on watercolors in various shades and using brush application techniques to create texture comes next. After the paint has dried, the masking tape is carefully lifted and a mixture of crayon, colored pencil, and paint is applied to the stark whiteness of the trees to add realism.
