Still Life Flower Pots
These vibrant art works nearly have an Impressionistic feel to them with the way the colors are sketched on and blended over each other. Take a look at practically any Van Gogh painting and you can see this comparison. 5th graders had to draw two pots on their paper and were taught how to contour the lines so that they add an element of realism to the work. If the lines placed on the pots were drawn straight they would not look nearly as volumetric. It’s simple to know that the curving of the lines are what makes the pots look more realistic and 5th graders understand this by the end of the project.
The blending of oil pastels by layering them is a new technique that is learned in this lesson. Instead of using paper towels or their fingers to blend out the color, students directly overlap the colors and “push” them out and away. This creates a smoothly blended area of color but allows each of the hues to still stand strongly alone.
