To make anything look three-dimensional on a two-dimensional surface requires the artist to have an understanding of shadow and highlights. Learning how to apply this to simple forms is the best way to learn how to apply them to those that are more complex. It is important to start students with these skill building assignments at an early age so their chances of proficiency increase greatly by the time they are in high school and are expected to use these techniques regularly on assignments.
Students also learn blending techniques with the oil pastels used to complete this assignment. Blending with a paper towel now will later translate into blending with a paintbrush on later, more complicated, assignments as we explore how to smooth colors together using different art mediums.
