It's a Jungle Out There: Animal Inspired Fashion Design
Fashion design is a challenging and competitive field to go into for a career but also an exciting and fast paced one. New trends and styles must always be considered and must be combined with a unique perspective. One designer's line of clothing must stand apart from the others while still meeting the demands of the public of what is trendy. Risk taking must be calculated carefully when trying new things but it is often these blind leaps of faith that help a designer's line catch its big break and become the hottest selling items on the market.
The current trend in the fashion world (for this assignment at least) is animal inspired items of clothing. Students must prepare sketches detailing the clothes they want to see made out of fabric to be presented on the runway. They must provide descriptions of the pieces and provide fabric swatches in which the clothes will be made of. Before we begin actually sketching our own ideas out, a lesson in figure drawing is first presented so students can better sketch the models they are showing the clothes on. We look at and study many different styles of clothing and students must pick what personally appeals to them and then apply the criteria of the assignment to the sketch they create.
