One Hour Printmaking
Students were given the challenge of creating an artwork in one class period. To make it even more of a challenge - they had to create their styrofoam cut stamp first which was to be the main focal point on the work. Students were given a brief demonstration on how to impress and carve designs into the styrofoam using basic tools, such as a dull pencil, and they were shown how to use the brayers to roll the ink out so it can be placed on the stamp. They had to create a shape and create a texture which would be printed on their final paper.
This assignment forces students to think fast. They must complete something by the end of the hour using the printmaking tool they created. Time management skills are a must and the challenges of overcoming the mental roadblocks of "I don't know what to do" must be brushed aside - and quickly. Students are forced to dive in and allow the creative side of the brains take over and deliver results on their paper.
